This object was created as part of the variable photographic installation *blühende Landschaften / beleuchtete Wiesen* (Blooming Landscapes / Illuminated Meadows, 2024). It is based on a collection of digital and analog photographs—begun in 2022—through which I have been exploring, at irregular intervals, my new living and working environment in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: its history, its everyday realities, and its spatial structures. In the urban landscape of Demmin, I came across a utility box bearing the spray-painted slogan: "Her mit dem schönen Leben" (Bring on the good life). Who doesn’t wish for a good life? Yet what does this phrase actually mean today? Is it a demand? And if so, to whom is it addressed? It is almost as if there were some authority responsible for delivering the good life. Research reveals a wide variety of contexts in which the phrase appears—as the title of a novel, a short film, or even a wine. It can be understood as a call to actively claim one’s own happiness rather than passively waiting for it. Perhaps it also represents a form of rebellion against the pressure to perform and the mere act of functioning within the system. At the same time, it echoes a hedonistic aspiration: the right to pleasure, lightness, and a good life in the here and now. But what meaning does this phrase take on at a street intersection in Demmin? In a small town—one of the oldest in Pomerania—whose history is shaped by the lingering trauma of the mass suicide that occurred at the end of the Second World War; a historical event that is currently being instrumentalized by right-wing actors.
